Prenatal recommendations

Pregnancy is such a beautiful (and yes, also uncomfortable) time of growth and change. You are preparing your mind, your heart and your home to meet your baby. I learned new insights every time I brought our 4 babies earth side. And after supporting dozens of women prenatally and postpartum, I have some ideas on what helps the most. And as a devoted list-lover, here are my recommendations for prenatal planning and support:

  1. Find a provider you enjoy being around. Midwives and OB/GYNs both can fall under this category. Do they take time to listen to you and your concerns? Do you feel more at peace or unsettled when you leave their office? If you have any doubts, at any point, try another provider! Your doula can offer suggestions.

  2. Just get the pregnancy pillow now. You won’t regret having it but you will regret NOT having it.

  3. Talk to your employer about the amount of leave you plan to take. Know your rights.

  4. Hire a doula. Check my resources page for local recommendations. Doulas provide emotional support, education and loving guidance for couples during the prenatal period, continuous support during labor and postpartum support. Their support is invaluable!

  5. Get on the same page with your partner. Roles tend to shift when a baby arrives. Read a book together like And Baby Makes Three by the Gottmans.

  6. Make a postpartum plan. I have an upcoming class for this in August. You can also set up a video or in-person consult with me to make a personalized plan. First time parents tend to underestimate how sleep-deprived they will be in the early weeks. Prepare for that in advance by gathering your support now.

With support and planning, your postpartum period can be restorative and connective. I would love to be a part of your support, reach out for a prenatal consultation.
